Map Modernization Vision
The NWFWMD vision for the Map Modernization initiative is to provide more accurate and complete flood hazard information for counties and communities within the District. This information will result in better decisions concerning flood risk and sustainable development alternatives for flood hazard areas throughout the District.
By the end of FY2009, all of the sixteen counties in the NWFWMD will have an updated Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM), some with new detailed studies, some with approximate studies and some with updated base mapping. As currently planned, funding for the DFIRM products will be for fifteen of the counties in the NWFWMD. However, funding for the Jefferson County DFIRM project is currently planned by the Suwannee River Water Management District’s (SRWMD).
The DFIRMs will provide web based digital flood maps that will allow for easy updates as development changes occur. These updates will be part of the maintenance phase of the mapping program. Ultimately, the District would like detailed mapping using detailed topography (LiDAR) for all of its populated and rapidly growing coastal areas as well as providing more detail in both of its unmapped and unnumbered areas likely to experience significant development pressures in the coming years.
With the updated DFIRMs and the District’s ongoing emphasis on protection and acquisition of flood prone areas, the flood protection goals and the non-structural floodplain management strategy of the NWFWMD will be enhanced.
