Flood Protection Goals
Two of the major goals of the District are to minimize harm from flooding and to enhance public awareness, understanding and participation in water resource management.
There are no major flood control facilities in northwest Florida, nor does the District own or operate any facilities that provide flood protection. Since the structural approach tends
to be more expensive and involve greater flood risks, the nonstructural approach is preferred by the District to protect and manage floods. Thus, the District goals, which are heavily dependent on suitable floodplain delineations, are closely aligned with FEMA’s Map Mod initiative.
